This year marks the City of Grande Prairie’s 100th anniversary and as part of the celebrations the city partnered with the GP Century Play Society, a local non-profit specifically established to produce a century themed play.  The play, co-written by local writers Kristjanna Gimmelt and Catherine McLaughlin, was titled “Chasing the Dream” and is based on historical research and stories gathered through over 200 interviews. Play director Annie Smith was charged with gathering a team of local volunteers to bring the outdoor theatre event of the century to life.

Griffin Fischer

We are bombarded with an image of today’s youth that portrays them as lazy, apathetic and only interested in portable screens. It is safe to assume that based on this image, volunteerism would rank low on the totem pole of their interests. Here is one youth in Grande Prairie that challenges this stereotype: Meet Griffin Fischer, a 16 year old high school student, active volunteer and advocate for community involvement.

Cheyanne Hairie 

Volunteer with Peace Area Riding for the Disabled Society

As a first time volunteer Cheyanne Hairie did not know what to expect when her mother first told her about the volunteer opportunities open to youth at Peace Area Riding for the Disabled Society (PARDS). She explains, “my mom used to volunteer with horses in Montreal and thought I would enjoy it [and] because I love horses [I] thought it would be fun to do something I love”. And so began her journey to volunteerism as Cheyanne signed on to become a volunteer for the horse camps offered by PARDS.
